DNV Healthcare Inc (DNVHC)* has reached an important milestone. The US Department of Health and Human Services' Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) agency, has accepted DNVHC's application for accreditation as complete. A 30-day public comment period for DNVHC's accreditation proposal started on April 25th, and will end on May 27, 2008 at 5:00pm. CMS has completed a technical review of DNVHC's survey documents and has conducted a corporate office audit. The application has progressed to the next stage which involves a CMS on-site observation of a DNV accreditation survey.
Why is this important?
When DNVHC will be approved by CMS, healthcare providers will have access to a new breakthrough approach to accreditation. This new approach will integrate worldwide standards for continuous quality improvement with the Medicare Conditions of Participation. U.S. hospital accreditation is presently dominated by the not-for-profit Joint Commission with annual revenues of around $140 million.
How is NIAHOsm different from current accrediting models?
NIAHOsm is the first Integrated AccreditationTM program combining the dual standards frameworks of ISO 9001 with the Medicare Hospital Conditions of Participation. Current NIAHOsm hospitals are already seeing the benefits of the integrated program in financial performance, error reduction and patient safety enhancements.
NIAHOsm compresses the survey cycle from every three years to annually, thereby ensuring that continual quality improvement becomes an ingrained behavior. As a global leader in standards and industry certifications, we know that infrequent surveys create a fire drill effect that drains valuable resources and provides little lasting value to the organization being audited.
